Trial lessons
  • If you have never flown in a glider before and would like to find out what flying one is like come along for a first lesson in a two seater glider with one of our qualified BGA instructors. No prebooking is required.
Aerotow trial lessons and one day courses include 30 days free club full membership.

  • After a pre-flight briefing, depending on what type of launch you have chosen, you will be launched either by a ground based winch to around 1000 feet or towed up to 2000 or 4000 feet by a powered tug aircraft. After the launch you will then have time to enjoy the views and take the opportunity to learn how to fly the glider. Your instructor will brief you on what to expect on the flight and give you demonstrations of how to control the glider. You can then practise flying it yourself if you wish.

  • Vouchers are available for first lessons from aerotow, and for one day courses. Ideal as a gift, or for a special occasion.
For more information on trial lessons, contact the secretary

  • Flying is available every weekend and bank holiday throughout the year

  • We also accept valid trial lesson vouchers issued by the British Gliding Association (but not for the one day courses).

  • Prebooking is now possible on certain dates. At other times  flights are on a first come first served basis. It is a good idea to phone the clubhouse or launchpoint before leaving home if you have any queries about the weather

  • To ensure we are able to fly you within the loading limits of the glider there are weight limits in the club two seaters. You must weigh between a minimum of 98lbs (7 stone, 44.5Kg) and a maximum of 224lbs (16 stone, 102Kg). If you are over 15 stone you should contact the club beforehand to check availability of instructors. The minimum age is 14 years old but there is no maximum age!

  • Important advice regarding car insurance.
Most policies exclude liability when "airside" on an airfield.
You therefore may wish to check your policy, and if not covered, not to take your car onto the airfield. For insurance purposes the whole site is likely to be considered airside.

One Day Courses - an introduction to gliding
update 30/4/08  Only one place left for One Day Courses this year - May 10th

About the Course
The course is designed for people who have an interest in gliding and want the best opportunity to experience gliding and to learn some of the basic principles of flying.

The day will be devoted to your flying needs, giving you some basic information and instructional flying in our two seater gliders. You will handle the aircraft in the air and start the learning process of how to use the elements around you, putting into practice some of the basic information you will have been given. Whilst others are flying you will become part of the essential ground team helping others to fly.

Our friendly club members will encourage you to participate in all the activities and help you with any questions you might have.

The course offers 3 aerotows or 6 winch launches or a combination, together with 1 month temporary full membership, and a pilot's logbook.

You can then come along any weekend for the following month as a full member and take advantage of the favourable flying rates for full members.

FAQ
How much do trial lessons cost?
Winch launch               £36
Aerotow to 2000 feet    £70
Aerotow to 4000 feet    £110
One day course            £175
All except the winch launch include one month's free full membership. Also vouchers are not available for the winch launch.

What do I get?
An aerotow is a tow to 2000ft or 4000ft behind a tow plane. Flights typically from 2000ft last around 15 minutes and depending on weather conditions on the day it may be a little shorter or longer. If it's possible to soar they are limited to 30 minutes for the 2000 feet tow and 60 minutes for the 4000 feet flight.
For one day courses please look at the details above.

A one month full club membership is included which allows you to come back and try gliding at normal flying member rates.

How long do the vouchers last?
Trial lesson vouchers are valid for 6 months only, and are non refundable. This does not apply to one day courses which must be pre booked.

What clothing?
The airfield is on top of a small ridge and as with all airfields can be cold, even on bright sunny days. We advise you to bring something warm to compensate. Please wear casual comfortable clothing. Several thin layers are probably better than one thick one.

When is the best time to try it?
Almost anytime, and probably not always on the days you may have thought of as best. You don't need a hot summer's day to have a good flight as these days are often hazy and the club can be busy with members and visitors. In fact spring, autumn and winter days with clear cool air can often give some of the best conditions for a good scenic flight and increase the chance of some thermals to give a soaring flight.

How do I go about having a flight?
Just turn up early in the day at the airfield, or purchase a voucher

Can I learn to fly?
Yes, almost certainly, within weight restrictions.
If you think flying could be for you why not join the club. We specialise in training people of all ages all the way from an initial flight up to cross country soaring and advanced gliding.

How do I find you?
Please see location maps
